...decided to grow up on me. And in so doing, she decided to follow her Nana's footsteps and the footsteps
also of her Grand Nana. In June of 2006 Ashleigh graduated as a Registered Nurse and I couldn't be more proud.
As a graduating gift my Mom (Ashleigh's Nana) wanted to give her a pair of nursing pins that had been received
when Mom started her career. There was also a pair from when Grand Nana started her career. I was asked to make
a simple box, and chose to make three of them (the third is below).
The box on the left is of Silver maple. The tree was harvested in South Surrey by our band of merry
woodbutchers and this was a scrap piece I had laying around. The box on the right is of Black (yellow)
locust. This is actually milled from a burl that was harvested from a downed tree in New Westminster
(I happened to have the chainsaw in the truck, so I tucked my tie in and made a little sawdust!). Both woods
have been air dried.
The boxes are small, measuring about 4x6 and the corners are splined miters. The coves were cut by running
the assembled boxes over the table saw blade at a 45° angle and doing repetitive passes while raising the
blade. The finish is garnet shellac made from flakes and sanded to a dull roar.
Congratulations Ashleigh. You're just plain awesome!
